The making of Avenida Nueve de Julio

If you have visited Buenos Aires, you are familiar with the wide boulevard of Avenida Nueve de Julio. These before and after images show the extent of the demolition in making of 9 de Julio (photo on the left, around 1936).  The rubble from the demolition was used as fill to create the seaside barrio of Puerto Madero, and Parque Ecológico.

The change did not happen all at once. This photo, taken around 1940, shows only some of the buildings cleared with finished parkways in the cleared areas.

In this photo from the 60’s, somewhere near Avenida Santa Fe, we can see the Obelisco not far away in the background.

Here is another view, from the top of the Obelisco, looking north along what would become Nueve de Julio.
